On Monday, March 17, enrollment for the Summer and Fall semesters at LCCC will begin. This includes registration for all courses. Registration will begin on a pro-rated schedule, with students able to register based on the number of credits they have previously earned. Please note that these totals do not include the credits a student is currently enrolled in or has withdrawn or failed. The schedule is as follows: Monday, March 17: Students with 65 or more previously earned credit hours may register at 8:30 AM Tuesday, March 18: Students with 45 or more previously earned credit hours may register at 8:30 AM Wednesday, March 19: Students with 25 or more previously earned credit hours may register at 8:30 AM Thursday, March 20: Students with 10 or more previously earned credit hours may register at 8:30 AM Friday, March 21: Non-PSEO students may register at 8:30 AM, regardless of credit hours earned. These include the LCCC Connections Center, the LCCC Learning Center at St. Joseph Community Center in Lorain, the LCCC Wellington Center, and the LCCC Growth Partnership Learning Center in downtown Elyria. Make your plans early! If you want to schedule your courses in the days, times, terms, and locations you prefer, scheduling early is recommended. You may want to meet with an LCCC academic advisor or counselor to plan your schedule. Advisors are available on a walk-in basis at the Connections Center on main campus, or by appointments at the St. Joseph Community Center in Lorain and the LCCC Wellington Center. In addition, you may want to make an appointment with an LCCC counselor. Call (440) 366-4033 to make an appointment with a counselor. If you haven't already applied, now is a great time. The LCCC application is available online and can be mailed to main campus. There is no essay question and no application fee. Once you apply, most students need to take the Compass examination, depending on specific situations. If you need to take the Compass examination, now is the perfect time to begin the process! The Compass may be taken at the Testing Center on LCCC's main campus, or in the learning center locations in Lorain and Wellington. Please call ahead to confirm availability and schedules if you plan to take the exam in Lorain or Wellington. A photo ID is required to take the exam and the exam takes the average student 3 hours to complete. Some may take more, some less. Practice questions are available at www.lorainccc.edu/compass. The exam may be taken in sections if your schedule does not permit a three-hour block to take the entire exam. Additionally, the exam is being offered at several area high school sites for incoming PSEO students or high school seniors. Check with your local high school for availability. PSEO students must register through the main campus. Appointments are requested to meet either Kathy Lathwell, academic advisor, or Joe Burkhart, PSEO counselor. Please call (440) 366-4032 for an appointment. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment to this entry. I'll try to post the answers below for all to see! ~Dan January 29 So What is PSEO?If you are in high school, you’ve probably heard of PSEO from someone. So what exactly is it? PSEO stands for Post Secondary Enrollment Options. PSEO is a program that the state is offering to allow high school students to start their college career while they are in high school. If you’re a high achieving high school student, PSEO might be a program to start your college career a little early. There are two different forms of PSEO: Credit in Escrow and PSEO-B. I’ll explain each a little bit: A form of PSEO is Credit in Escrow. Credit in Escrow allows students to take college courses without regards to high school policies; however, students are responsible for tuition, books, and related fees and expenses. The program is designed for students who may already be taking a full schedule at their high school to still take a college class or two. The credit earned applies only to college, and is held in “escrow” until the student is a college student. For more information, contact Rochelle Lappis at (440) 366-7740. The final form of PSEO is Option B. This is by far the most popular program and is the program offered at most area high schools. PSEO Option B students earn dual credit – that is, high school credit and college credit at the same time. Students are bound by their high school graduation requirements, so guidance counselors sign off on any college scheduling changes that the student may be doing at the post-secondary institution. This process assures that students meet both their high school graduation requirements while earning college credit that is useful to the major program they want to enter. Option B classes are completely free – tuition, books, and related fees are provided free of charge. PSEO students get “rental” books – that is, they pick up books in the bookstore, identify themselves as PSEO, don’t pay for the books, and return them at the end of the semester. PSEO students get the full benefits of being a college student – that is, they are eligible to use the Field House, Computer Labs, etc. Students get a student ID card to identify themselves as a student of LCCC. Currently around 10%, or 1,000 of LCCC’s students are PSEO. There are GPA requirements and application deadlines that students must meet. Rising seniors must have a 3.0 GPA, rising juniors a 3.5 GPA, rising sophomores a 3.7 GPA, and rising freshmen a 3.9 GPA. The best bet is for students to meet with their high school guidance counselor to discuss the pros and cons of the PSEO program. LCCC also holds a PSEO information night for interested students and parents in late February. For more information about PSEO or if you have general questions, call (440) 366-4012 and a member of the LCCC Marketing Staff will assist you.
